What Gear Do You Need to Start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? (Beginner Guide)

If you’re thinking about starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is: “What gear do I actually need?”

The good news is that getting started with BJJ in the Sydney CBD is straightforward and more flexible than many people expect.

At Garage Jiu Jitsu CBD, we keep things beginner-friendly, with no strict uniform policy and clear guidance on what you need to train comfortably and safely.

The Basics: What You Need to Start Jiu Jitsu

You don’t need much to begin Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but there are a few essentials worth knowing about.

1. A Gi (for Gi Classes)

A gi is the traditional BJJ uniform a jacket and pants designed for gripping and grappling.

For gi classes:

  • Any BJJ-specific gi is fine

  • There is no required brand or colour at Garage Jiu Jitsu CBD

  • Make sure it fits properly and is in good condition

👉 Important: Not all gis come with a belt, so you may need to purchase a belt separately.

2. A Belt (Often Sold Separately)

Belts indicate rank in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and are worn during gi classes.

For beginners:

  • You’ll start with a white belt

  • Many gis do not include a belt, so check before buying

  • Any standard BJJ belt is acceptable

3. Rash Guard (Required for No-Gi, Recommended for Gi)

A rash guard is a tight-fitting athletic top worn during training.

Rash guards:

  • Are required for No-Gi classes

  • Are recommended under the gi for hygiene and comfort

  • Help prevent mat burns and skin irritation

Both long and short sleeve rash guards are fine.

4. Shorts (For No-Gi Classes)

For No-Gi training, you’ll need:

  • Grappling or athletic shorts

  • No pockets, zips, or hard materials

This keeps training safe for you and your training partners.

5. Optional Extras

Not required, but commonly used:

  • Mouthguard

  • Water bottle

  • Finger or toe tape

How BJJ Gear Sizing Works

Most BJJ gear (especially gis) is sized using a combination of height and weight.

When choosing a gi:

  • Check the brand’s size chart

  • Use your height and weight as the main reference

  • If you’re between sizes, ask for advice, different brands fit differently

If you’re unsure, our coaches or staff at Garage Jiu Jitsu CBD are always happy to help.

No Uniform Policy at Garage Jiu Jitsu CBD

At Garage Jiu Jitsu CBD, we do not enforce a uniform policy.

That means:

  • You can wear any gi brand

  • You can buy rash guards and shorts from anywhere

  • You don’t need to purchase gym-branded gear to train

Our focus is on training quality, safety, and community, not uniform restrictions.
